Physical therapy is an integral part of recovering from the surgical treatment of various cancers. It can help reduce post-operative swelling, restore movement and strength, and improve overall function. Learn safe exercises and self-care practices throughout the phases of your recovery. Your oncology PT will work in coordination with your surgical and oncology team. Skilled PT provided for the following:

  • mastectomy/lumpectomy

  • lymph node dissection

  • head and neck cancer surgery

  • melanoma removal/resection

  • breast reconstruction (tissue expanders, implants, DIEP, TUG)

  • axillary cording/axillary web syndrome (AWS)

Lymphedema is a swelling condition that can develop after parts of the lymphatic system are damaged by cancer treatments. It can be treated with complete decongestive therapy (CDT). CDT includes lymphatic massage, compression bandaging, exercise, skin care, and use of compression garments. Physical therapy for lymphedema aims to reduce swelling, obtain appropriate compression garments, and develop self-care practices to manage this chronic condition. Skilled PT provided for the following:

  • secondary lymphedema (arm, leg, face/neck, pelvic region)

  • primary lymphedema

  • lymphedema risk reduction/education

  • lipidema

  • post lymphatic surgeries

Cancer treatment often causes a loss of strength, stamina and, sometimes, balance. Exercise is the best way to regain function. Knowing how much and which exercises to do during and after cancer treatment isn’t always clear. Oncology physical therapy can help guide your exercise program so that you’re doing the right exercises at the right time in your recovery.
